The Tipperary Inn

Wow, I'm really surprised to read the not-so-great reviews. I love the Tipp, but I also love mellow pubs with limited smoking. Quiet evenings out don't bother me very much. With that said, I understand being preturbed when a place is "out of" items on the menu. My charitable suspicion would be that maybe the Yelp event took them by surprise? Once I think they were out of mayonnaise, so I got herbed mayo instead--not a horrible substitution. I will admit, the place has plenty of quirk.

Besides that though, the bar itself has a landmark quality with its charming interior and the food is actually very good. The curries can be a bit strange occasionally, but the burgers are unbelievably delicious. I will drive out of my way for a Guinness & Gouda burger, so don't write this place off. Drop in for a cozy Irish meal, and remember that The Tipperary Inn is a bit of a Lakewood institution--it's had its ups and downs.

Lovely atmosphere (which includes super clean bathrooms) and wonderful food--I ordered Poached Eggs with browned rosemary butter, near perfect. And the earl grey-infused chocolate pudding-ish dessert was just heavenly. Careful not to overdo it on chocolate though--it would be easy at this place.

I'll echo all the other service complaints, it's bad. I'm not a huge fan of vegan cuisine (much as I like the idea), so I ordered the richest thing I saw on the menu -- polenta with mushroom gravy & it was pretty darn good. Points for serving beet juice, too.

Hands down, the best seafood risotto I have ever tasted--unbelievable! No frills, but delicious. And the clam chowder was superb.

Magnolia Cafe & Bakery

Nice deli sandwiches and soups, in fact very tasty. What holds me way back from a 4- or 5-star rating is the fact that the bakery figures so prominently in this establishment, while the baked goods are only average (if not slightly below).

I've had the complimentary banana/blueberry breads (eh), the thumbprint cookies (ho-hum), and today a lovely cupcake that tasted a bit like a corn muffin covered in overly sweet chocolate frosting. The bakery case is a sight to behold, everything so pretty with piped-on icings. But the balance of textures and flavors are 'off' in these cakes & cookies.

With all that said, the soups and sandwiches are all very good.

Crazy, insane wait for brunch, but on the bright side the host managing the waiting list was also crazy & insane which kept it interesting. Coffee served in a french press, yum. Eggs benedict innovation: served atop potato skins! Yes, the slab of ham was overkill, but tasty just the same. Oh, and they serve Cap'n Crunch french toast :)

Gosh, I really loved this place, sad to hear about the infestation. I will tell myself it was kittens. Or maybe it was a chocolate cupcake infestation? They had the best cupcakes. Basically everything was yummy, and the atmosphere was warm & cozy. I hope they get the kittens under control.

A charming yarn shop tucked away in the McKinney Ave area, stocking a nice selection of staple brands and some luxurious yarns, too. The ladies here are really helpful and friendly. Being near downtown, it's convenient for all us city dwellers. The 'Sheep is my new fave yarn store :)

Two Guys From Italy

I am going from memory alone ... after a couple mediocre Italian experiences recently I find myself craving two guys, capital T.G. ... from Italy. It's a family favorite where the ceiling is decked out with hanging plastic grapes and chianti bottles, cozy. I always order the cannelloni, always. Because the pasta is like pastry and the filling is meaty-spinach-y goodness. Not sure I can make through the next week without a trip to TGFI (!).

The lo mein is not the greasy mess you have learned to expect at Chinese restaurants--the noodles are thin and dry-ish, and the pan flavor is on! Cash only. That's all you need to know.
